The Social Side of Design

Acknowledging the special needs and diverse necessities of all, we need to empower and alleviate the society and the daily practices by design. Designers will be stepping up with creating solutions and opportunities for societal challenges within the theme. During Milan Design Week 2022, Isola hosts an exhibition and talks about social design for the elders in collaboration with the Dutch Consulate in Milan and the Dutch Embassy in Rome.

Social Design is a living, evolving term born in opposition to the purely commercial design concept.

It is a design method not only aimed at obtaining a product that improves certain aspects of daily life but is also a design that aims at inclusion. This type of inclusion can be done through collaborative planning, that is, by placing directly interested parties who live in particular situations at the centre of the process, favouring participatory logic and involving them during the planning phase.

With a focus on social design for the elderly, the exhibition and talk will bring inspiring projects to Isola.

About the speakers:

Empowering society by design, Petra Janssen from Social Label will give a talk about designing labour that emphasizes how the future will be about working together.

With Stichting de Tijdmachine, Tim Trooster is bringing experience-oriented care to nursing homes and mainly focuses on the well-being of the elderly. By bringing the elderly back to the smells, colours, and atmospheres of their early years, they realize how they want to shape their present.

Studio Anne Ligtenberg is opening up the conversation about aging with a collaborative card game for care workers. The aim is to continue to see the elderly in their homes as people who can still be asked for something for which they can use their experience and qualities.
