HortiPower’s mobile farm is inspiring food empowerment for our global community. HortiPower Mobile Farm @hortipower

The mobile farm stems from one of HortiPower’s early developments. In 2019, they launched their Nurser grow lights to support the growth of a client’s crop of bananas. In turn, they discovered a method that boosted plant wellbeing and development, as well as proving how microalgae offered a future for food production. These experiments extended into smaller batch testing, an investigation that proved the practicality of growing crops indoors. The mobile farm, exhibited at this year’s digital Dutch Design Week, has an impressive output, growing enough greens for 12 nutritional salads per week or 75 medium-sized strawberries.

The mobile farm is formed through a metal framed grow rack that accommodates four levels of Nutrient Film Technique channels filled with crops. The frame was designed to also be substituted with IKEA’s OMAR shelf for ease and accessibility. Easily adaptable to at-home spaces, the mobile farm only uses .54m2 of floor space. The plants are grown hydroponically with HortiPower’s Nurser grow lights overhead, reducing the water consumption. To address consumer issues of algae growth, the channels are double insulated, white on the outside and black on the inside, they also improve root zone temperature control and aeration. The Nurser 3 interlocking LED grow lighting provides optimal brightness and color for plants, including a full spectrum of light with increased deep-red and blue to enhance photosynthesis. The lighting provides a tailored amount of white light to better suit the human eye than earlier at-home growing options. Available in varying lengths and extendable to 15 pieces of 18 meters the lighting can be stacked, moved, and altered to meet your specific needs. HortiPower is introducing Light as a service which allows aspiring urban farmers to start at 17% of the original capital required. The mobile farm promotes the technical versatility that HortiPower has become known for and beloved by scientists and companies.

HortiPower has recognized the growing trend to favor local ecological production. In emerging countries, there is limited access to high-quality local produce leading to shortages caused by weather, failing infrastructure, and food security. This product enables individuals and communities to become urban farmers growing cleaner, fresher, and smarter greens. It increases their accessibility to healthy foods but decreases the impact of international food transportation on the environment. Through a streamlined process, HortiPower minimizes materials and engages in a DIY structure that encourages the use of local materials to reduce these costs and unsustainable practices. The mobile farm makes vertical farming affordable, scalable, and accessible in emerging countries as well as for hobbyists and craft growers. The zero tools required, small amount of required space, and efficient system for plant growth allow nutritious food to be a viable and easy solution for taking at-home farming to the next level. Not only does the mobile farm offer year-round growing opportunities, but growing hydroponically has also proven to be 90% more water-efficient. A 35-liter tank can supply 48 or 96 plants with nutrient-rich recirculated water. With the optimal lighting conditions HortiPower provides, plants will thrive anywhere, every day.
